NASA celebrates 50 years of US Orbital Space flight, proves John Glenn still cooler than your dad (video)
Feb 20th 2012, 17:42

In the US, today is a day for remembering our many Presidents who have come before but, in between those sincere thoughts of Grover Cleveland and Calvin Coolidge, take a moment to ponder the great feats of John Glenn. On this day 50 years ago a Real American Hero blasted off into space, Glenn becoming the first American to achieve orbit. In just under five hours he rocketed away from Kennedy Space Center, made three trips around the globe and then splashed down again in the Atlantic. Of course, there's a lot more to the story than that, and so NASA has created a 25 minute documentary about the trip, embedded for you below. Need more? Head on through to the source link for galleries, infographics and even 3D clickable models of the Friendship 7 spacecraft -- all available to you without reaching escape velocity.

LightSquared's troubles continue, company defaults on $56M payment to Inmarsat
Feb 20th 2012, 17:21

It's been a while since LightSquared had some good news to boast about, and it doesn't look like that situation's about to change anytime soon. The latest stumble for the company stems from its 2007 agreement with UK-based satellite operator and spectrum owner Inmarsat, which was due a $56.25 million payment from LightSquared that it has now defaulted on. For its part, LightSquared is laying some of the blame on Inmarsat, saying that it has "raised several matters that require resolution" before the first phase of the agreement comes to a close, and that "the terms of the agreement allow for additional time to resolve pending questions before phase one is complete and the final payment is due." This comes as the company faces a brick wall in the form of the FCC, which it has been struggling to get approval from and has recently been criticizing in increasingly blunt terms. Its full statement on the Inmarsat matter can be found after the break.

GTVHacker tool brings Sony Google TVs root access, full Flash streaming
Feb 20th 2012, 16:44

Early Google TV adopters looking for root access can get it easily on their Sony units, thanks to the just released GTVHacker Sony Recovery Downgrader & Rebooter. Unlike brute force hacks we've seen so far for the Revue, this is an all-software method that requires (only) four 512MB or larger USB sticks to get the job done. Once completed the developers indicate their unsigned kernel includes a modified Flash plugin that will let users stream all the Hulu and other network TV content that has otherwise been denied the Google TV, plus other tweaks like optional support for NTFS formatted drives. It disables automatic updates, but users can still switch back to the stock software by resetting the unit in recovery mode. Once you've dug up your Atari Jaguar Sony Google TV remote, hit the links below for all the software and instructions necessary to get the job done although as always, YMMV.

Huawei Ascend D1 Q shows off its corners, packs the same number of processors?
Feb 20th 2012, 16:05

Huawei's continuing to shore up its very own gang of smartphones and it looks like another another addition's been spotted on the horizon. A handful of official-looking images reveal a possible new flagship, the Ascend D1 Q, toting some curves and color detail -- at least on the speaker grill and camera unit. Sidestepping the slimline looks seen on the P1 series, the D1 Q is rumored to be the powerhouse of the set, supposedly housing a quad-core processor -- which would explain that Q suffix. With that annual mobile show just days away, expect to see some more concrete specifications very soon.
