Layar Creator sees an interactive future for print media via augmented reality (video)

Heavy hitters across several industries have tried to find the perfect balance between the old and the new to breathe some life into what's been described as a dying medium. Layar "wants to make the world clickable" with its augmented reality software and doesn't plan on letting paper-based media go the way of paying for long distance or total privacy. Instead, it's opted to fully welcome it into this brave new digital world by letting publishers embed videos and interactive buttons onto existing printed materials. The mobile app can then display superimposed content that pops right up on the page when viewed through a device's camera. This new web app, Layar Creator, is free if you can get your stuff published and all Layared up before August 1st, but if you're a procrastinator, a 100-page bundle will run €999 ($1,242), or €15 ($18.65) per page. You can see the the Layar Creator and AR app in full effect right after the break.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 E3 briefing video is now available for replays online

The pre-E3 briefing is crucial for all major videogame companies, and if you missed Microsoft's noontime keynote yesterday you can relive it live and in HD on Xbox.com. The stream is up on Xbox.com for your viewing pleasure to be shocked (again) that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Halo 4 are going to involve shooting things, or marvel at how much time Microsoft spent highlighting the Xbox 360's non-gaming prowess with fitness or video applications. Check in with Major Nelson and the crew at the source link below, although we're sure it could use some SmartGlass tie-ins with our liveblog coverage.

Sony Playstation Move Racing Wheel handson

After Sony's PlayStation keynote last night here at E3, PlayStation.Blog made a sort-of-surprise announcement when it officially detailed the $40 Move Racing Wheel -- something we only caught passing glimpses of during our liveblog. Naturally, we decided to drop by Sony's booth to find out whether the peripheral might potentially pass muster for you serious virtual racers out there. Our verdict after some racing in LittleBigPlant Karting? Definitely not, but it sure is interesting despite a few quirks. Join us past the break where we'll break it down with text and video.

NYT: Office for iPad is still on
Jun 6th 2012, 01:46

Office for iPad leak

Microsoft vehemently objected to Office for iPad rumors almost as soon as they first showed up, quashing hopes in the process -- or so we thought. The New York Times now contends that Redmond's PR might just have been exercising plausible deniability: sources for the newspaper assert that Office for iPad is still a reality and that the details, not the app itself, are in dispute. Most of the questions instead surround the launch day and price. A follow-up answer from Microsoft hasn't settled much other than to get the boilerplate no-comment remark, but we wouldn't be surprised if Google's acquisition of Quickoffice spurs a few discussions at Microsoft about tablet-native Office suites for more than just Windows 8.

Elgato Game Capture HD hands-on
Jun 6th 2012, 01:26

Elgato Game Capture HD handson

Elgato first announced its Game Capture HD device mere weeks ago, but since the thing went on sale earlier this month, we hadn't gotten a chance to see it in the flesh. Naturally, given E3's all-things-gaming nature, Elgato brought the device to E3 and we got a chance to get our hands on one. In case you forgot, the Game Capture HD's a lightweight, palm-sized device that plugs in between your Xbox or PS3 and your TV to capture footage of you pwning family and friends. It then converts the footage into Elgato's preferred H.264 format and dumps it on your PC or Mac so you can share your gaming exploits with the world. Still not ready to drop $200 on the thing? Perhaps our gallery of pics can persuade you.

Mophie's Juice Pack PRO aims to keep iPhone 4 / 4S protected and powered during wild adventures

Mophie's Juice Pack PRO aims to keep iPhone 4 4S protected and powered during wild adventures

Staying true to its peripheral nature, Mophie's outed yet another iPhone companion: the Juice Pack PRO. Although the new power-boosting case doesn't carry as much juice as that Powerstation (not surprising, really), it does offer similar ruggedized aesthetics -- which should come in handy the next time you decide to take your Cupertino handset on a hazardous trip. Mophie notes the Juice Pack PRO can more than double the iPhone 4 / 4S life with its 2,500mAh battery, but the company's also placing a hefty amount of focus on the add-on's water splash, sand, impact and shock protection features -- these, naturally, earned the PRO a MIL-STD 810G (Military Standard) rating on the testing grounds. If all that makes this Juice the one for you, then gather up $129.95 and head over to the Mophie site to snag one for yourself.
