Acer announces Aspire S7 Ultrabook series with 11.6- and 13.3-inch touchscreens

DNP STUB Acer announces Aspire S7 Ultrabook series with 116 and 133inch screens

Back in October Acer was the first company to release an Ultrabook, and since then it's added yet another to its collection. Until now, though, the lineup had one glaring omission: a smaller-screened model to complement those two 13-inch PCs. Well, no more. Here at Computex 2012, the outfit just announced the Aspire S7 series, which includes two touchscreen models: a 13-incher as well as the company's first 11.6-inch Ultrabook. The S7 series will no doubt be the first of many touch-enabled Ultrabooks we see in Taipei this week, and these in particular have screens that fold back 180 degrees, allowing the system to lie flat. Unlike the original S3, which caught flack for its chintzy design, these two are made of unibody aluminum and sport backlit keyboards and "full HD" displays, making these the most premium Ultrabooks Acer has attempted so far. In the case of the 13-inch version, too, you'll get a glass lid -- something previously seen only on the HP Envy 14 Spectre.

As for specs, Acer isn't sharing too many details right now, though we do know the 11-inch model is rated for up to nine hours of battery life, while the larger promises up to 12. With these systems, Acer is also introducing its so-called Twin Air cooling system (not that overheating was much of a problem on the original S3). In terms of pricing and availability, Acer has a long history of revealing those details separately, with a different announcement for each region. For now, though, stay tuned because Acer has the S7 laptops on display here and we'll be back shortly bringing you hands-on photos and video.

Acer announces Windows 8 allinone U Series at Computex 2012

Acer just introduced two Windows 8-equipped U Series all-in-one desktops here at Computer 2012 in Taipei -- the 27-inch Aspire 7600U and 23-inch Aspire 5600U. The 7600U features a 64-point capacitive multitouch tilt and swivel display and is only 3.5cm (1.38 inches) thick, while the 5600U is billed as "the thinnest AIO available" (no numbers specified). Both system feature HD visuals and Dolby Home Theater Surround sound, but there are no details on specs. Stay tuned for more information and hit the break for another picture along with the obligatory PR.

Acer unveils 11.6-inch Iconia W700, 10.1-inch W510 Windows 8 tablets

Acer unveils 116inch Iconia W700, 101inch W510 Windows 8 tablets

And the flood of Windows tablets begins! With only four months or so to go before Microsoft finalizes the OS, we had a feeling Computex 2012 would bring lots of Win8 devices, and it looks like we won't be disappointed. Acer just used its press conference here in Taipei to launch its long-awaited first Windows 8 slates, the Iconia W700 and Iconia W510.

That first flavor packs a relatively massive 11.6-inch full HD (1920 x 1080) display with touch support for up to 10 fingers, and ships with a cradle that positions the device at 70 degrees for landscape viewing or 20 degrees for touch use. It has more than 8 hours of battery life and also includes a trio of USB 3.0 ports, along with Dolby Home Theater for enhanced audio. Acer appears to be marketing the W700 as a "desktop replacement" when paired with a cradle and keyboard.

The Iconia W510 includes a 10.1-inch IPS display and a detachable keyboard dock that doubles as an extended battery, enabling up to 18 hours of use. You can also rotate the device 295 degrees for presentations -- assuming you're lecturing a small group and not a packed auditorium, of course. There's no pricing and availability to speak of just yet -- we're hoping to see that hit later in the week.

Vodafone's recharging truck returns for the 2012 festival season, wants to scan your hand

Vodafone's recharging truck returns for the 2012 festival season, wants to scan your hand

A new and improved version of Vodafone's massively mobile multiple handset recharger is being rolled out just in time for thousands of festival-goers to all hold up their phones to record the same Black Keys performance. The revamped truck still does that whole charging 2,000 phones at once thing, but adds DJ booths and new hand scanners to help phone owners more efficiently retrieve their gadgets, when it comes time to check into Foursquare -- you don't want someone else to become the mayor of the chillout tent, after all.
