Windows Phone Marketplace surpasses 100,000 app submissions

Windows Phone Marketplace surpasses 100,000 app submissions, puts on big kid pants

Hitting the big six digits is no small feat for an app store, so it's definitely worth celebrating. Taking just over five months to double its numbers, the Windows Phone Marketplace has now seen 100,000 applications submitted since its humble beginnings, and now enjoys an average daily submission count of 313 apps. As a disclaimer, this doesn't mean we currently have access to all hundred-thousand apps -- just over 10,000 of them are no longer available, which translates into 88,371 apps being live somewhere in the world. Still, the milestone is an important one because only two other app stores have made it this far (we bet you can guess which ones). The Marketplace reached this mark five months faster than the Android Market, but three months slower than the iOS App Store. Given the popularity of both competitors, we'd say that developer growth has been strong and steady for Windows Phone -- and with an exciting 'sneak peek' of the OS's future (Apollo) coming up in a couple weeks, the trend is likely to continue increasing at an exponential pace.

[Thanks, Tom]

Nintendo: two Wii U Gamepads will work on one system

Nintendo two Wii U Gamepads will work on one system

Nintendo broke a few hearts when it initially said the Wii U would only support one of its unique Gamepads. Much to our delight, the company just said in its live keynote that the final console will support two. As such, it'll be possible to have truly equal two-player games instead of relegating a friend to the old-fashioned Wii remote and Nunchuk. Of course, how much that extra Gamepad will cost we have yet to know -- along with whether or not it'll be possible to have strictly Gamepad-to-Gamepad titles that skip the TV entirely. We expect to find out soon.

Nintendo Wii U will offer Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and Amazon Video
Jun 5th 2012, 16:22

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata himself may have dropped word of Netflix support on the Wii U last year, but the company's now fully confirmed that and a whole lot more during its E3 keynote today. In addition to Netflix, the console's streaming video options will include Hulu, YouTube and Amazon Video. Unfortunately, the company didn't delve much into specifics beyond that, but it's clear that Nintendo is putting a much bigger emphasis on video and entertainment on the Wii U than it did on the original Wii -- "Games, Social, Entertainment" are the key words, as it puts it.

Google acquires Quickoffice, expands cloudbased app suit for enterprise

What's a search giant with nigh endless cash reserves to do? Acquire, acquire, acquire -- that's what. In keeping with its recent track record, Google's taken yet another company under its ever expansive wing with the purchase of Quickoffice. The move, no doubt positioned to further the company's reach in enterprise cloud services, should enhance its existing portoflio of GApps and, by logical extension, Docs. It's safe to say that the company just bought itself an existing suit-and-tie user base and a mobile future filled with even more native productivity applications. Check out the source below for Mountain View's official release.

OnLive's E3 blowout includes new games, easy in-browser access, MultiView and LG's Google TV

OnLive E3 blowout includes gaming on LG Google TVs, oneclick inbrowser gaming and ingame live spectating

OnLive launched in the summer of 2010 streaming games to PCs or Macs, and now two years later it has returned to E3 feeling pretty good about the state of cloud gaming and its place in it. Among a series of announcements going out are news that it will be demonstrating gaming on smart TVs for the first time on LG's G2 Google TVs with support for up to four universal OnLive controllers at once. The Google TV viewer app has been out, although OnLive gaming has been closely tied to Vizio's upcoming Google TV models in the past while LG showed off Gaikai access at CES. It's not available on retail units yet, but is expected to be added in a software update, with an eye towards adding support for Cinema 3D gaming later on. At the same time it's rolling out an update to its in-browser gaming clients that lets publishers and retailers launch players into games without creating a login.

Finally, we've got the new OnLive MultiView feature that lets players see the video stream of another player without exiting their own session. As suggested in the press release (all are included after the break), it can let you check in on a friend's game as it happens, or even see from a teammate's perspective during a co-op match. That feature is currently in closed beta and is set to launch later this year, read on for all the details about what OnLive is up to and a list of games coming soon that includes Darksiders II, Civilization V: Gods and Kings and more.

Live from Nintendo's E3 2012 keynote!

Nintendo has a new console up its sleeve and it just can't wait to show it to you. Of course, we've already seen plenty on the Wii U, and Nintendo saw fit to steal its own thunder with a pre-pre-show livestream, but that's no matter. Surely there's more good stuff to see, and we can't wait to bring it to ya.

$99 Xbox 360 and Kinect bundle rolling out to Best Buy and GameStop this month
Jun 5th 2012, 15:40

$99 Xbox 360 and Kinect bundle rolling out to Best Buy and GameStop this month

Microsoft's canny subscription-based Xbox scheme launched last month, but was , at that point, limited to its own stores. Looks like it's been deemed a success though, as Microsoft has decided to expand the deal to all Best Buy and selected GameStop stores later this month. The $99 deal ties you into a two-year subscription at $14.99 per month and includes a 4GB Xbox 360, Kinect unit and Xbox Live Gold. According to Microsoft, this is only the next stage of the "pilot period", with limited numbers and dates. No specifics just yet on those exact numbers and which stores will be offering the deal. But even if SmartGlass didn't grab you the first time round, this makes it even harder to say no. Your turn, Nintendo.

Nintendo's black Wii U, first eyeson

Here's a little treat while we wait for the Nintendo Keynote to kick in: the gaming giant carted out the black version of its upcoming console, placing it on a column at the front of the stage for all to see as we file in for the event. The black Wii U console made an extremely quick cameo on Sunday night's pre-pre-E3 press conference, and we expect to see a good deal more of it in the days to come. In the meantime, however, you can enjoy it in the gallery below.

Billy Steele contributed to this report.

Peter Molyneux reveals first game from his new studio: Curiosity coming to iOS and PC

Peter Molyneux reveals first game from his new studio: Curiosity coming to iOS and PC

Peter Molyneux has revealed what he's been up to since he left Lionhead. At E3, he paid a visit to Spike TV, bringing with him several screens from his upcoming title, Curiosity. He didn't give away much on what we can expect from 22 Cans' first effort, although we'd hazard a guess at something "conceptual." It's set to arrive on PC and iOS in around six weeks and Molyneux was showing off those stills from his iPad. Hit up the source for the full -- but brief -- interview.

SanDisk's new iNAND Extreme flash storage forms part of Tegra 3 'reference designs'
Jun 5th 2012, 15:22

SanDisk readies iNAND storage for tablets and smartphones, forms part of Tegra 3 'reference designs'SanDisk has added a little more detail to its latest iteration of embeddable flash storage, iNAND Extreme. Built through 19 nm process technology, the flash memory is geared towards portables like smartphones and tablets, with SanDisk mentioning both Android and Windows RT in the same breath. Capacities will range from 16GB to 128GB and it's apparently already a core part of NVIDIA's Tegra 3 reference designs -- and we all know quad-core processor deserve the best. The 128GB version is capable of up to 45 MB/sec write and 100 MB/sec read speeds. SanDisk also mentions a new pair of PCIe-based SSDs for enterprise. Up to five of the Lightning PCIe SSAs (200GB / 400GB) can be connected together in a single system, while SanDisk also offers up a caching option for Windows users. You just have to be willing to stump up some more cash for the company's own FlashSoft software on top of a $1,350 entry price. The full details on both are waiting right after the break.
