Tuesday marked the announcement of the greatly awaited Apple iPad 2. It was unveiled by Steve Jobs, who also introduced the senior vice president of iOS software who spoke about an update to Apple’s mobile operating system.
The new iPad2 is slimmer than the first iPad and has several new features that are in direct competition with some of the Android units.
Besides the iPad 2, the new iOS 4.3 will be out March 11, the same day as the new iPad 2tablet. The iPad2 will come with the new operating system, but the original iPad, as well as the third- and fourth-generation iPod Touch, the iPhone 3GS and the GSM iPhone 4 by AT&T can download it for free. The CDMA iPhone sold by Verizon will not be able to take advantage of this new update.
The iOS 4.3 will give users faster web-browsing via an updated version of Mobile Safari, which will have an improved version of Apple’s Nitro JavaScript engine. This new version will let iOS devices use JavaScript at a rate that is twice as fast as before. The majority of popular websites use JavaScript, so this should mean a very noticeable boost in speed.
Apple also said that users who upgrade to the new iOS 4.3 get to enjoy improved media sharing between compatible devices. This means that iPad and iPhone users can stream any music, movies, and television shows from their iTunes library on their computer right to another device via a local Wi-Fi connection. Plus, AirPlay support has opened up in iOS 4.3 and will let third-party apps and Websites have access to full audio and video streaming via AirPlay.
Now that iOS 4.3 is coming out, any iPhone 4 can function as a mobile hotspot. This personal hotspot capability lets iPhone 4 users share a 3G connection with other devices using Wi-Fi, which matches one of Android’s long-standing abilities. Up to five devices will be able to be used at once. You will be able to hook up three Wi-Fi, one Bluetooth and one USB device. It has yet to be announced the fee for this hotspot, but this could be why Verizon’s phone isn’t included. Verizon already has a hotspot functionality so it doesn’t need the new software.
The Verizon iPhone will be updated separately because it uses a different baseband chip than the other iPhones, and needs a different firmware and Apple is possibly waiting until Qualcomm comes up with a dedicated update for the chip inside the Verizon type iPhones.
