When it arrives in October, it'll offer navigation, traffic and IQ routes to tempt users away from Google's bundled navigation applications and onto the company's paid service. The terse teaser is bundled after the break, but until the GPS maven opens up about its new platform, we'll just have to be patient. Permalink | | Email this | Comments | | Canon announces EOS C100 cinema camera, confirms October shipping for the C500 Aug 29th 2012, 08:55  Canon already gave those looking for a full-frame DSLR plenty to think about recently, and now it's stirring up the movie-maker's pot. It's just announced a new member to its EOS digital cinema collection -- the EOS C100 -- and given us a better idea of when we can expect that C500 to land. The C100 essentially offers a new prospect for those with pockets not quite so deep. Unlike its 4K sibling, the C100 offers 1,920 x 1,080 AVCHD via its Super 35mm 16:9 CMOS sensor, has an ISO range of 320 to 20,000 and sports the EF mount system. Other features of interest include a push auto iris function, one-shot auto focus, a multi-angle 3.5-inch LCD and a locking HDMI output. The C500, meanwhile, has now been tipped for an October debut with that princely $30,000 price-tag. But, if the C100 sounds more your jive, then you can scoop one up in November for a slightly less tax-deductible $7,999. Canon also took the opportunity to offer up two new cinema lenses: the CN-E15.5-47mm T2.8 L S/SP wide-angle and the CN-E30-105mm T2.8 L S/SP telephoto. Care to know more? Permalink | | Email this | Comments | | Grooveshark back in Google Play after piracy hullabaloo Aug 29th 2012, 08:43  Grooveshark is no stranger to controversy, but after it was sued by major music labels, Google decided it'd had enough and pulled the app last year. But the streaming service said it's never allowed free downloading, claiming other apps using its name without permission were permitting the piracy instead. The faux-Grooveshark offenders were booted with Google's help, and the app has subsequently been re-stocked on Play's virtual shelves. Meanwhile, the company has paid its debt to EMI, and could even be the target of an acquisition, according to CNET. First up is a trio of speakers that push tunes from your smartphone, including a $180 WiFi-connected Smart Radio, a $250 Boombox and a $100 Mobile Boombox, the latter of which seems like it could take on Jawbone's Jambox and win on price alone. If you prefer strapping your tunes to your skull, the company's got a lovely looking pair of $400 in-ear monitor-style earphones that are said to be the closest you'll get to a professional set. Cans-wise, the range is topped by a $350 pair of Bluetooth-headphones that are built for the rigors of being tossed in your bag when you reach the office. If you're worried about nursing your battery after a long day, the company thoughtfully bundled a cable in the set. If your wallet won't stretch to those prices, lower-spec wired versions are available for $200 and $100, respectively. For those of us who've found our sets die at the cable connections, the company's smartly built all of theirs to be braided, detachable and each one has an in-line hands-free kit as standard. Permalink | | Email this | Comments | | Haier celebrates IFA with ultra high def 3D, transparent and eye-controlled TVs Aug 29th 2012, 08:00  Haier was a bit of a sleeper hit at last year's IFA, and the company looks to be taking on 2012's Berlin-based show in way. For 2011, TV maker showed off its futuristic transparent and brain-controlled TV technologies. This year's selections are set to follow in that vein, beginning with the debut of a new 46-inch transparent TV built on last year's technology, capable of detecting six points at the same time. As before, Haier's seeing business potential in the device, and will be showing it off in the context of a window display at this year's show. Also on the slate is the company's first 3D LED Ultra High Definition set, a 55-incher that will be displaying Ultra High Def footage of booth visitors. Haier will be showcasing even more 3D stuff at the show, including a 55-inch glasses-free LED set with 28 viewing angles and 3D Multi-View, "which allows two people to watch two different images at the same time, on the total surface area of the screen," according to the company. Also on the docket is an eye-controlled set that lets viewers take charge of volume and channels with their peepers and a 3D gesture control system that has a camera built into the set's frame. On a more old school tip is the "high performance sensitive" remote, which has a nine-axis gyroscope inside.
