Chase, Capital One and Barclaycard join as launch partners for Isis mobile payment service
Feb 27th 2012, 22:56

The Isis mobile payment service backed by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon may have been a bit overshadowed by Google Wallet in recent months, but it's still on track for a "mid-2012" trial launch in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah, and it's now gotten a boost from a trio of new financial partners. Chase, Capital One and Barclaycard confirmed today that they'll each support the NFC-based service and let folks load their credit, debit and prepaid cards into their Isis Mobile Wallet, joining existing partners Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. Unfortunately, any specific launch details beyond that still remain a bit on the light side, with Isis only promising that a national rollout will follow sometime after the initial trial launch.

Mozilla partners with Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom to further Boot to Gecko project
Feb 27th 2012, 22:29

Boot to Gecko
So far, we have seen neither hide nor hair of that rumored LG-built Boot to Gecko developer device. Mozilla hasn't exactly been keeping quiet, though. The company announced a pair of partners on the web standards-based mobile OS: Telefónica and Deutsche Telekom. The German parent company of T-Mobile will be lending members of its Innovation Labs team to the development of the project. Telefónica will be bringing hardware to the equation. It revealed plans to build "open web devices" based on B2G for release this year. Qualcomm and Adobe are also throwing their weight behind the HTML5 platform. Before the week is through we should be able to scrounge up a few more details and spend some hands-on time with the OS.

Olympus board announces chairman and president picks, resigns
Feb 27th 2012, 22:05

Olympus's entire board handed in its resignation this week, but not before picking a new president and chairman to head up the scandal plagued imaging company. Hiroyuki Sasa, from its medical equipment marketing arm, has been named for the president spot, and Yasuyuki Kimoto, who served as an executive for the Olympus-connected Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., has been picked for role of chairman. Both appointments are pending shareholder approval. Sasa, for his part, stated the importance of getting consumers back on board with the company in light recent controversies, telling the press, "My duty is to win back as soon as possible the trust from everyone and repair this damaged brand."

Must See HDTV (February 27th - March 4th)
Feb 27th 2012, 21:47

Our sports options may be a bit more limited this week (hope you like basketball and hockey), but while the Daytona 500 tries to get under way, there's a few other items to keep an eye on in this week's listings. One of our favorites is coming back on the air, while a couple of brand new shows also compete for our attention. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Daytona 500
Yes, again. The Great American Race has been bumped to Monday night, and could even slide to Tuesday if the rain in central Florida doesn't let up by tonight. Hopefully they get the race in, seeing NASCAR's premiere race under the light's is sure to be a wild affair, if they can get in all 500 miles.
(February 27th, Fox, 7PM)

Psych
One of our favorite shows, it features fake psychic detective Shawn Spencer and his best friend Gus bumbling their way through various murder investigations. This usually includes a pineapple and multiple 60s/90s references, so if that sounds like your kind of procedural, you should be watchin this week as it returns from midseason hiatus with guest star Cary Elwes again filling the role of master art thief Despereaux.
(February 29th, USA, 10PM)

Awake
If that's not your kind of detective show, try this one on for size. NBC's latest attempt features Detective Michael Britten alternating between two different worlds after a tragic car crash, where in one he and his wife survived, while in the other he and his son are the only survivors. The hook seems to be figuring out which one is the dream and which is real, while of course solving various murders the whole time.
(March 4th, NBC, 10PM)

TI reveals more OMAP 5 details at MWC 2012
Feb 27th 2012, 21:11

Well, if our hands-on at CES didn't sell you on TI's next-gen OMAP 5 platform, perhaps some more specs revealed recently at MWC 2012 will. We've known about its dual Cortex-A15 and Cortex-M4 architecture since this time last year, but we didn't know that those M4 cores are there to handle real-time processing of multimedia -- like video encoding and decoding -- which TI claims can provide up to ten percent power savings. Additionally, the company's wunderkind SoC will pack a dual-core PowerVR SGX544 GPU and a dedicated 2D hardware-accelerated composition engine to deliver great graphics and lower power consumption than other mobile silicon solutions. OMAP 5 also comes with a multi-tasking image signal processor that can use up to four image sensors at the same time, or take 1080p 60fps video while snapping 12-megapixel stills simultaneously. So, you ready for a super-speedy OMAP 5 chip in your next smartphone yet? Those who are still skeptical can peruse the PR after the break for a full rundown of its considerable capabilities.
